This is among the meatiest, most dexterous funk you'll ever hear. Defunkt was formed by jazz musicians in the 1970s, and the top musical ability shows. The music rests on the thick, athletic bass of Melvin Gibbs. Gibbs tone is so deep, his sliding and patterns so complex, the singer, comping guitar and horns can add amazingly complicated flourishes around him.

My description is hyper-technical but the music is emphatically not. This work shakes and stomps with the best funk, but is bigger, fuller. You'll be shaking your a-s, then stop dead, awed at just how miraculously good Defunkt is. Gibbs later played with Henry Rollans. Hear his work on Weight
