DESH was composed to accompany Akram Khan's theatre work of the same name. For the score, Jocelyn Pook combined field recordings she made in Bangladesh (Khan's homeland) with hymns, chants and the rhythm of urban chaos. The music translates into sound the sights, energy and colour Pook experienced into fragile pieces scored for chamber ensemble as well as pieces harnessing the power of full orchestra. Singers from around the world complete the score Debra Caine of The Times called, haunting and magical, excited and angry.
