Anna Crane, soon to be married, reflects back on her childhood in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, during the 1960's and '70s with her two sisters and Lilly, her charismatic mother. When Anna falls in love with a wild boy who works at the local horse track, she finds herself caught between her love for her mother and her own passions. As Anna and her sisters struggle toward adulthood, they begin to see how their mother's failure to let go of the past threatens the future of the family. The novel races to a chilling conclusion, when Anna is betrayed by the twwo most important people in her young life.
