art love story, part psychological thriller, this story is about the war in Ireland and the psychological pull of family and conflict. The book was shortlisted for the Dillons First Fiction Award in 1995 - O'Riordan somehow manages to put the nuances of a real relationship down on paper without resorting to cliches or becoming one-dimensional. Despite the important role the political situation in the North plays in the plot, she keeps the story firmly centered on the characters and doesn't veer off on wider tangents. The ending is incredibly chilling, yet seems inevitable once you get over the initial shock.
