Property consultant Carl Matthews (Morrissey) lives with his wife Maggie (Colman) and their two unappreciative teenage children on the outskirts of London. Every morning he commutes via the 7.39 train to the city where he works for a demanding boss who only serves to heighten his dissatisfaction with the way his life is going. One morning, he meets the much-younger Sally (Smith) who is likewise unhappy in her own relationship. Over the course of the following days the pair become more and more intimate with each other, but will their affair last or is it merely a passing fling?
