The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood (1985) is a dystopian novel set in the Republic of Gilead, a totalitarian, patriarchal, and theonomic regime that has replaced the United States. Following a fertility crisis, fertile women are enslaved as "Handmaids" to bear children for elite Commanders. The story, told by Handmaid Offred, explores themes of extreme misogyny, the loss of agency, and resistance against a surveillance state.
