The book is set in British Guyana in the early 20th century. It depicts the life of immigrant Indians in a multiracial and multicultural society. However, he faces brutal opposition at every turn, especially from his strange, wilful mother, grown possesive and destructive in her alienation and loneliness, so far from the land of her birth.
