While following a trace of the "Watchmaker" to Mexiko through Katharina Dance, Lincoln Rhyme is distracted by events in New York. Only some Days before the "Earth Day"-celebrations in the city somebody has used the electrical grid of the city as a kind of shotgun on a communal bus-stop and killed one while injuring many. Since terrorist-activity seems probable the FBI and the Office of Homeland Security are involved and Lincoln Rhyme, Amelia Sachs and Ron Pulaski have to learn quite a bit about electricity and its use as a weapon. And all the time their adversary ups the ante.
