Artikelbeschreibung
The Image is a collection of 22 short stories by the 1978 Noble Prize Winner Isaac Bashevis Singer. Every story in this collection is fascinating because Singer has the knack of describing people and their environment in unusual but interesting ways, he usually has unexpected endings to his stories like O’Henry, his characters are frequently somewhat strange, and they perform somewhat unusual acts, which may be different than what we do, but which are interesting. Many of his tales are filled with magical realism and are mystical. Others focus on sex, such as the following:
- Remnants – Singer focuses on two Jews who act strangely. The man is descendant of very pious Hasidic leaders, the woman is a flirt and irreligious, but they marry and are able to stay together for a while. But then something happens, then something else, and then a surprise ending.
- On the Way to the Poorhouse – A prostitute is able to go through life without suffering any of the calamities that befall prostitutes, such as venereal disease, until her legs become paralyzed. She is able, even in her disabled condition to attract men and get them to do as she wants. But there are people who despise her. The town decides after much conflict to send her to the poorhouse in another city. But something happens while she is being transported. (amazon)
