"Robert Knox" is a novel based on an English prisoner's account of his endurance of forced but patient stay in an alien land for over nineteen years in mid seventeenth century. It had been selectively extracted and prosaically compressed into an alluring and exciting fiction of historical and social substance. Designed and developed in chronological sequence, it depicts the life and acquaintance of Robert Knox who landed unexpectedly in the Island of Ceylon as a total stranger, but ended up as a close associate of the local officials and a good friend of the inhabitants. Dharmakirti's work owes much of its content to Knox's "An Historical Relations of the Island Ceylon" and other material gathered from various historical sources and folk-legends still alive among the people. His work is readable, pleasant and informative in many respects. It fuses history with fiction without each diminishing the depth and importance of the other.
